Measure

Be thorough when measuring.

  • To measure the room in which you will install your kitchen isn’t hard to do, but you must get it right. Your measurements will be the basis for all your planning.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to measure precisely. Make sure to make your measurements in millimeters to make sure your new kitchen correctly fits your space. Here’s how you do it.

Measuring your room

  1. Have proper tools handy – pen, paper, and measuring tools.
  2. Draw your room layout on a sheet of paper. We recommend having one piece of paper for each wall.
  3. Measure the floor to ceiling, marking the highest and lowest points.
  4. Measure each wall fully from floor to ceiling and from doors to windows. Remember to include door and window frames.
  5. Note anything that sticks out of the room (radiators, ventilation shafts, window sills).
  6. Measure ventilation outlet for kitchen extractor hood.
  7. Not all water supply and drain pipes, as well as their new location if you plan to move them.
  8. Mark existing power outlets, switches, and gas lines, as well as their new locations if you plan to move them.

Measuring your worktop
It is important to get the measurements for your worktop right, especially if you plan to order a custom-made one.

  1. Have proper tools handy. Carpenters rule/tape measure, pencil, and angle square.
  2. Measure your worktop starting from one corner to the opposite end. Secure that all length and depth measurements are taken from at least two places. Don’t forget to add 30 mm to the length of the cover panel and overhang.
  3. Measure from the corner of the worktop to the center of the base cabinet where your sink is located.
  4. Then measure from the corner to the center of your hob. Notice where the joints are and keep this in mind.
  5. Measure the thickness of your worktop.
  6. If you have a kitchen island, don’t forget to take measurements of your existing worktop, including the center of cut-outs.

Plan your kitchen

Now it’s time to make your dreams and ideas take shape

  • There are a lot of things to consider and think about. Take your time to make sure you end up with the kitchen you wished for. On the following pages, we’ve gathered recommendations and tips that’ll help you along the way.
  • Think about how you normally use your kitchen and what feels comfortable for you. Look at your existing kitchen and make a list of the things you like and what you’d want to change.

Workflow

IKEA-ikbe25-Kitchen-Planning-FIG- (10)

A good natural flow between the fridge/freezer, the cooking zone, and the washing-up zone will make your everyday kitchen life a lot easier.

When planning your kitchen, keep the three work zones in mind: Preparing/cooking Washing up Food Storage
How you position your work zones and the distance between them is called a working triangle. A good working triangle helps you to move quickly and easily from task to task – and it simplifies if you’re more than one person in the kitchen doing different tasks at the same time.

Planning

  1. Single-line kitchens are perfect when space is limited. It’s not strictly speaking a triangle, but the three points are still connected.
  2. Parallel kitchens are great if you have many people cooking at the same time. There’s lots of room for food preparations and storage, too.
  3. L-shaped kitchens make the most of a corner. They’re ideal if you want to add a small dining table or kitchen island as well.
  4. If you have space, adding an island to your kitchen gives you extra storge, and lots of work space – plus, it’s a great social hub. Give yourself 1200 mm between the island and other cabinets to move around freely.
  5. If you have a large room, the U-shaped layout is great. It gives you maximum space and plenty of storage options.
  6. A U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula provides plenty of storage and a functional workspace for food preparations. With an overhang on the exterior side combined with bar stools, you get a convenient place to sit in the kitchen.

Recommendations

Here are some recommendations to get the most out of your kitchen.

Keep in mind

  1. The best place for preparing food is the work surface between the hob and the sink.
  2. Make sure that the distance between opposite rows of cabinets is wide enough for doors on both sides to be opened at the same time.
  3. Place the wall cabinets high enough not to block the view over the worktop.
  4. Make space next to the hob for pot stands, where you can place hot objects.
  5. For safety and functionality, follow the recommended height as shown in the assembly instructions for the extractor hood. The height is different whether it is an induction or a gas hob installed in the kitchen.
  6. Leave space for cover panels if you have wall cabinets next to the extractor hood/fan.
  7. Place a filler piece (minimum 50 mm) between the base as well as wall cabinets and the wall to ensure space enough to open doors and drawers fully.
  8. If the worktop protrudes over the cabinet more than 250 mm, add extra support.
  9. Place the sink and hob in the same line to avoid having to move hot objects over the floor.

IKEA-ikbe25-Kitchen-Planning-FIG- (13)

Keep in mind for small space solutions
When space is limited, there are always options to make it work.

  1. Use a small sink that fits into a 600 mm cabinet. Make sure to have at least 100 mm between the sink and the edges of the worktop to make the construction sturdy.
  2. To have a good preparation area try to squeeze in at least 400 mm workspace between the hob and the sink.
  3. Have at least 200 mm space between the hob and the wall for safe cooking.
  4. If your space is too narrow for 600 mm deep cabinets, you can use 370 mm deep cabinets instead.
  5. Make use of the wall to maximize storage opportunities and free up space on the worktop.
  6. Add a trolley to optimize your small space and create more storage possibilities.

IKEA-ikbe25-Kitchen-Planning-FIG- (14)

Tips

  1. An elevated oven means you won’t have to bend down to reach it.
  2. Locate the dishwasher close to the water supply and drain pipes. Having the dishwasher close to the sink makes loading easier and avoids spills on the floor.
  3. Keep utensils, pots, and pans close to the hob and sink for easy access when preparing and cooking. Keep cutlery in a drawer close to the dinner table.
  4. Drawers offer a great overview and easy access to the things you need. Add drawer mats to keep things from moving around in the drawers and to reduce noise when putting things in drawers.
  5. Place your waste sorting bins in a drawer under, or close to, the sink for easy access.
  6. Push openers are great if you have your hands full and need to open a drawer with your knee or elbow – and to avoid leaving stains on the fronts and handles with sticky fingers.
  7. OpOptimizeheth  space behind your fronts with inner drawers. The outside can stay sleek while the inside is filled to the brim with drawers.
  8. Use wall rails and accessories to make the best use of wall space as well as to minimize clutter on the worktop. In addition, you’ll get the things you use often close at hand for efficient cooking.

IKEA-ikbe25-Kitchen-Planning-FIG- (15)

Don’ts

  1. A sink by the window is nice when washing up. If your windows open inwards, however, make sure they won’t be blocked by the tap.
  2. Placing a sink next to a wall or at the end of a row of cabinets disrupts workflow by limiting available workspace.
  3. An oven next to a wall disruptsth  work floor by limiting available workspace, and it’ll put the wall at risk from heat and cooking stains.
  4. Positioning appliances like ovens, dishwashers, or extractor hoods in corners might block cabinets and drawers from opening fully.

IKEA-ikbe25-Kitchen-Planning-FIG- (16)

Lighting

  1. Good lighting that illuminates an even light over the entire worktop creates a functional workspace.
  2. Use drawer lighting to find what you’re looking for also when the kitchen isn’t fully lit.
  3. Display your fi nest glasses on tempered glass shelves behind glass doors. Add cabinet lighting to enhance a cozy atmosphere as well as to make the room look bigger.
  4. Kitchen island lighting is needed to light up the area and to provide task lighting above the workspace. It is also a way to round out your general lighting in the room.
